Stan Lee and Leiji Matsumoto

Stan Lee Media, Inc. officially announced that it is partnering with the estate of Gene Roddenberry to develop the property known as Starship” into a global, multimedia entertainment franchise under the collective brands of Roddenberry, Stan Lee and famed Japanese animator Leiji Matsumoto, best known as the creator of Yamato and Captain Harlock.

Matsumoto will supervise the artistic direction and create environments and spacecrafts for the property with Stan Lee and the team of John Semper, Jr. and Majel Barrett Roddenberry, both of who will co-own the franchise with Stan Lee Media.

Starship will initially launch online as a “rich media community with innovative interactive storytelling, themed games, creativity and community tools and e-commerce and participation by a global fan base in the development of the franchise.”

In addition, as previously reported, an animated feature film will be developed to be executive produced by Lee, Semper Jr., and Barrett Roddenberry with the intention of expanding the property for broadband, television, merchandising, and other diverse licensing activities within the next eighteen months, similar to Lee’s first web-born franchise the 7th Portal.
