Rose of Versailles to Become an Opera

Ryoko Ikeda’s Rose of Versailles (Berusaiyu no Bara) is set to become an opera. The manga, which debuted in 1972, and its anime TV series adaptation from 1979, tell the story of Oscar, a noblewoman raised as a man, who becomes the bodyguard of queen Marie Antoinette. The manga has sold over 12 million copies, and the TV series has earned a following in Europe, Asia and, to some degree, America.

Ikeda has stated in recent interviews, “I’ve long wanted to make an opera out of Berusaiyu no Bara.” The opera will be translated from Japanese into Italian in a bid to make it a world-class work, and is expected to last over 3 hours.
