Oldest Known Japanese Animation Discovered

The Asahi News has reported that a piece of original Japanese animated film estimated to have been created around 1907 was discovered in Kyoto last month by Osaka-Tokyo University of Arts and Music researcher Matsumoto Natsuki. The 50 frame piece of film was discovered in a private family film projector. The 3 second long animated sequence, which was hand drawn directly onto the celluloid in red and black, depicts a young boy wearing a sailor suit writing “katsudoushashin” (movie) on a blackboard, turning to face the audience and saluting.
