New Oishinbo Adaptation Announced

Writer Tetsu Kariya has announced that a live action TV special based on his popular Oishinbo cooking manga series will air next spring. The still ongoing Oishinbo manga by Tetsu Kariya and illustrator Akira Hanasaki premiered in 1983, and won the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1987. The series details the lives of food critics Shirou Yamaoka & Yuko Kurita.

Oishinbo was adapted into a 136 episode anime television series in 1988, which was followed by anime TV movies in 1992 & 1993. Five live action TV specials aired from 1994 through 1999. Two new live action TV specials aired in 2007.

The 2009 TV movie will mark the first time Kariya has contributed as a scriptwriter for one of the live action adaptations.

Viz Media will release the first volume of the Oishinbo manga in America next month.
