Microsoft Addresses Japanese Xbox Damaging CDs

In response to numerous complaints and public discussion, Microsoft has issued a public statement regarding the fact that the Japanese Xbox console has a tendency to leave small nicks and scratches on the outer edge of CDs played in the system. According to the official Japanese statement, “Minor scratches may sometimes occur on the outside of DVD/CDs after running in the Xbox. This is a natural phenomenon which happens with friction, and there has been no past reports that they have effected normal gameplay, DVD playback or CD music playback.” Microsoft has offered to replace consoles that inflict damage to CDs, but apparently will not actually replace or compensate consumers for damaged discs.

The fact that the Japanese Xbox console has been officially acknowledged to actually damage (at least cosmetically) CDs coupled with disappointing Japanese sales may portent a dismal future for the Xbox in Japan.
