Manga Goes Mainstream

The Associated Press has published an article discussing the adoption of “manga” into American publishing. The article reports that several newspapers owned by the Universal Press Syndicate, including the Los Angeles Times, Denver Post, Vancouver Sun and Seattle Post-Intelligencer, will begin publishing TOKYOPOP’s original American manga-style comics Van Von Hunter and Peach Fuzz in their Sunday comics sections in an attempt to attract a younger readership.

The article explains that, “Manga is more a storytelling style than a genre… Manga tales also tend to be more psychological and less action-oriented than its U.S. counterparts, such as Marvel’s superhero comics.” The article cites examples of “manga” creeping into American culture such as Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew “manga” adaptations by New York based publisher Papercutz, and CosmoGirl Magazine publishing one of TOKYOPOP’s original American “manga.”
