The upcoming Accel World: Ginyoku no Kakusei video game will be released in a limited edition that includes a bonus OVA. The Playstation 3 version of the game will include the OVA on Blu-ray while the PSP version of the game will include a DVD. The game will be released in Japan on September 13. The anime TV series adaptation of Reki Kawahara’s sci-fi/action/romance light novel series premiered on April 6.
Anime studio Kyoto Animation premiered its latest self-promotion TV ad last week. The studio has produced five original anime TV commercials promoting itself since 2010, although the first TV spot from June 2010 was also broadcast with an alternate text ending promoting the Soka Gakkai Buddhist organization.
Although very different stylistically from the earlier spots, this one is just as nice as its predecessors.
Avalon & Ghost in the Shell movie director Mamoru Oshii is now in Poland shooting footage for a trailer for From Software’s upcoming Xbox 360 mecha simulation game Jyutekki, known in English as “Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor.” The game is scheduled for American release on June 19. It will hit Japanese store shelves two days later. Oshii filmed his 2001 CG enhanced live-action action film Avalon in Poland.
IKUZONE (Baba Ikuzo), the 46 year-old bassist and co-founding member of Japanese rock band Dragon Ash died of acute heart failure on the night of April 21st. Dragon Ash’s first single, “Rainy Day and Day,” was used as the opening theme of the 1997 Virus -Virus Buster Serge- anime television series. The band has canceled its scheduled April 28th performance at the Okuma Beach Fest 2012.

I am a beta male, and as such I enjoy male anime characters that express their emotions. To me, it gives them more depth and personality as a character. However, I see such a blatant disgust among the western fandom for these kinds of men. They are dubbed as being too “whiny” or “emo.” I often hear from fans how they wish that anime men went back to being more masculine. What’s wrong with a male anime character having angst, sensitivity, and emotion? Isn’t that part of being human?
Sentai Filmworks has announced its acquisition of domestic distribution rights to the current Dusk Maiden of Amnesia (Tasogare OtomeĆAmnesia) and Tsuritama anime television series. Both titles will be released digitally “soon” with a home video release to follow. Crunchyroll is presently streaming both series as weekly episodes air on Japanese TV.
American-born music industry veteran and filmmaker Rashad Haughton now lives in Japan and is working with studios 4°C and Shirogumi on the production of Love Like Aliens, a six-minute short anime inspired by the illustrations of “Gynoid” creator Sorayama Hajime. The CG animation is not motion-captured. After filming sequences with live actors as reference models, Haughton directed the animators to illustrate the motions in animation “by eye.”

To little surprise, the hit Senran Kagura video game franchise now has a TV anime adaptation in development. Marvelous Entertainment’s original side-scrolling busty female ninja action game hit the Japanese Nintendo DS on September 22, 2011. Its sequel, Senran Kagura Burst, will hit the 3DS in August.
Question:
How did Mobile Suit Gundam end up becoming such a cultural phenomenon in Japan. With numerous sequels, spin-offs, games, models and references in other anime (Keroro Gunso for example where the title character’s main hobby is building Gundam models (or Gunpla). Did Yoshiyuki Tomino ever believe that that series he created back in 1979, would become a long running franchise that almost unmatched by other anime series.
Sentai Filmworks has announced its acquisition of domestic distribution rights to the current Medaka Box anime television series. Crunchyroll is presently streaming the Gainax adaptation of the school action/comedy manga by NisiOisin & Akira Akatsuki. Sentai will begin digital distribution of the series “soon,” followed by a home video release.
Sentai has also acquired distribution rights to the current third season of the Queen’s Blade anime TV series, Queen’s Blade: Rebellion. Crunchyroll is presently streaming the series. Sentai Filmworks will stream the series “soon” then release it on home video. Sentai has not clarified whether its acquisition includes the two Queen’s Blade Premium Visual Book exclusive OVAs that serve as a prequel to the Queen’s Blade: Rebellion TV series.
Discotek has announced plans for a debut American release of the original four St. Seiya theatrical films on subtitled DVD. The 1987 & 1988 films will be released on a single DVD while the second 1988 film and the 1989 film will be released on a single DVD. While AD Vision released the television series’ first 60 episodes on domestic DVD, and Crunchyroll has streamed the Saint Seiya prequel series “Lost Canvas” and sequel series “Omega,” the four theatrical films from the 1980s have never previously had an official American release.
The fifth collected volume of Saki Hasemi & Kentaro Yabuki’s To Love-Ru Darkness manga will be released on August 17 in a regular edition and a limited edition that includes an exclusive OAD. The 24 minute long anime episode will contain three short stories focusing on characters Momo, Mikan, and Haruna, respectively.
Norwegian author & illustrator Åshild Kanstad Johnsen has announced word that Japan’s TMS Entertainment is developing an anime television series adaptation of her children’s picture book Kubbe lager museum (Block Makes a Museum). TMS has already released a 90 second TV spot promoting last week’s Japanese publication of the 2010 book.
Manga creator HERO has announced that his web manga Hori-san & Miyamura-kun is now getting an OVA adaptation. The ongoing 4-panel romantic comedy manga premiered in 2007. The manga revolves around the relationship between Hori Kyoko, the most popular girl in her school, and her introvert classmate Miyamura Izumi.
