Momo e no Tegami Teaser Online

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

The homepage for creator & director Hiroyuki Okiura’s upcoming anime film Momo e no Tegami (A Letter to Momo) has added a streaming teaser. Since directing the 2000 film Jin-roh, Okiura spent seven years planning, writing, storyboarding, and now directing Momo e no Tegami, a story about a young girl who moves to rural Japan following the death of her father, where she begins to see strange things while wondering what her father wanted to tell her in his last, unfinished letter to her. The movie is being animated by a talented team of experienced animators at Production I.G. The movie will have its world premiere screening at the Toronto International Film Festival before opening theatrically in Japan during next spring’s Golden Week holiday.

With a bit of luck, this should be excellent. American productions usually suffer with “too many cooks in the kitchen,” but anime productions with all-star crew usually turn out exceptional.

Ask John: Why Don’t Some Titles Get License Rescued?

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Question:
I’ve always wondered why there are well-known anime that have yet to be rescue licensed. Are there reasons why many anime have been rescue licensed (Haibane Renmei and Serial Experiments Lain), and others haven’t been rescue licensed in years (Patlabor: The TV Series)?

Danboru Senki Coming to America?

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Reportedly Dentsu Entertainment USA plans to distribute OLM’s current Danboru Senki anime series in North, Central and South America under the title “Little Battlers Experience.” The anime is based on Level-5′s model building battle simulation RPG. The ongoing TV series premiered last March. Evidently Dentsu does not yet have an American distributor for the title but has “received numerous inquiries and are working to formalize relationships.”

Hopefully this will work out more successfully than Dentsu’s plans to distribute the Deltora Quest anime in America. And the folks that automatically criticize this as a children’s toy cash-in really should try watching some of it before blindly criticizing.

New Hunter x Hunter Anime to be a Reboot

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

The NTV broadcast network has announced that this fall’s new Hunter x Hunter television series will be a new adaptation of Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga starting from the beginning. The new show will be animated by Madhouse under director Hiroshi Koujina (Rainbow, Majin Tantei Nogami Neuro) and star an all new voice cast. The previous 92 episodes were animated by Nippon Animation.

While this decision may seem odd, long-time fans should remember that the previous Hunter x Hunter TV series and three follow-up OVA series were current from 1999-2004. So there’s been seven years for a new generation of Japanese viewers to grow up without any Hunter x Hunter anime.
