Megane na Kanojo Trailer Online

The Famitsu Magazine homepage now hosts a streaming trailer for next month’s Megane na Kanojo OVA. The OVA from anime production studio AIC will adapt four stories from manga creator Tobi’s manga anthology of short romance stories revolving around girls that wear glasses. The OVA will premiere on November 25.

Kara no Kyoukai OVA Teaser Online

The homepage for the Kara no Kyoukai anime movie series has released a two minute teaser for the upcoming “final chapter” OVA which will be released on February 2 on DVD and Blu-ray.

Future Black Lagoon OVAs Delayed

Japanese publisher Shogakukan’s website for the Black Lagoon franchise has announced that the remaining three episodes of the Black Lagoon: Roberta’s Blood Trail OVA series have been delayed for two to three months due to “production issues.” Episode 3 is now scheduled for a January 7, 2011 release. Episode 4 will be released on March 2, 2011. And the concluding OVA will hit DVD and Blu-ray on May 11, 2011.

Illumination Entertainment Picks Up Pluto

Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me), in partnership with Universal Pictures, has acquired the rights to tentatively produce a hybrid live-action and CG animation film adaptation of Naoki Urasawa’s award winning manga series Pluto. The manga is a mystery story set in a serious, dramatic vision of the world originally depicted in the late Osamu Tezuka’s Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy). Illumination Entertainment CEO Chris Meledandri said, “Naoki Urasawa has defined an imaginative world full of inventive action and adventure but it was his characters and heartfelt story that compelled me towards acquiring these rights.”

Moshidora Anime Announced

Natsumi Iwasaki’s 2009 novel Moshi Koukou Yakyuu no Joshi Manager ga Drucker no Management wo Yondara (What If a Female High School Baseball Team Manager Read Drucker’s “Management”?) will get a ten episode anime television series adaptation next March. The novel is the story of Minami Kawashima, the manager of Tokyo high school baseball team, who uses Austrian-American management guru Peter Drucker’s motivational strategy guide Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices to supervise and motivate her team.

Production I.G will animate the series with Takayuki Hamana (Prince of Tennis, Kemono no Souta Erin, Library War) directing.

Live Action Saijo no Meii Drama Announced

Reportedly next week’s issue of Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine will formally announce the development of a live action TV drama based on Takashi Hashiguchi and Kenzo Irie’s current manga Saijo no Meii (The Best Skilled Surgeon). The manga series stars a young man who was saved during his infancy by a skilled pediatric surgeon. To express his gratitude, the young man decides to himself become the world’s greatest pediatric surgeon. The series will premiere next January.

Ask John: Are There Any Recent ‘Must Buy’ R1 DVDs?

Question:
I’ve been away from the R1 anime DVD scene for the past few years and want to get back into it. Is there anything I would just die without having that’s been released in the past year or two? I did preorder the Dirty Pair TV sets from Nozomi, and was horrified the cover art has Kei and Yuri in their OVA silver uniforms rather than the ones they actually wore in the TV series. Blasphemy!

Elite Anime Video Announced

Japanese publisher Kodansha has announced that exerpted footage from an anime promotional video for Mayu Shinjo’s latest manga series, Elite!! ~Expert Latitudinous Investigation Team~, will premiere on November 10. The video will feature a theme song titled “Karma,” performed by Alice Nine.

Mayu Shinjo may be best known as the creator of the 1997 Kaikan Phrase manga serial that was adapted into a 44 episode 1999 anime television series.

Media Blasters Revises Kanokon Release

After releasing the first individual DVD volume of Kanokon on May 25 then placing the remaining two volumes on indefinite hiatus, Media Blasters has now announced plans to release the complete 12 episode series in a single DVD collection next March. The set will be, “Priced low enough so not to punish folks who picked up V1.”

Media Blasters Launches Rareflix Rental Kiosks

Media Blasters has launched the first of a planned 101 nationwide automated Rareflix branded DVD/BD rental kiosks heavily skewed toward anime. The $1 to $2 per night disc rental machines offer titles from Bandai Entertainment, Disney, Funimation, Media Blasters, Sentai Filmworks, Sony Pictures, and Viz Media, so far. The first machine is now in place and operational at the Image Anime store in New York City. The remaining 100 planned machines will appear across the country over the next 18 months.

Vertical Does Not Have No Longer Human (Yet)

Vertical has announced, via Facebook, that last weekend’s announcement of acquisition of publishing rights to Usamaru Furuya’s manga No Longer Human (Ningen Shikkaku), based on the classic Osamu Dazai novel, was made prematurely. Due to a “communications error,” Vertical thought that the acquisition had been secured when, in fact, the licensing negotation is still ongoing.
