Second Hen Zemi OAD Announced

Japanese publisher Kodansha has announced that limited edition copies of the fifth collected volume of Tagro’s comedy manga series Hen Zemi (“Abnormal Physiology Seminar”) will include the franchise’s second OAD. The series’ first anime episode was released last week with limited edition copies of the fourth manga volume. The fifth volume will go on sale March 23, 2011.

New Rokjoma no Shinryakusha Anime Streaming

The homepage for the ongoing “We Want to Adapt Rokujoma no Shinryakusha!? Into Anime!” campaign has added a new 29 second streaming anime clip. This is the third bit of original Rokujoma no Shinryakusha anime footage released since the site launched last March.

Opening A Day

To refresh your memory or introduce you to an interesting opening animation sequence, I offer the openings of the two Dancing Blade: Katte ni Momotenshi interactive anime from Kyoto Animation (K-On, Lucky Star, Kanon) and Konami. Originally released in 1998 & 1999, these specific openings are from the 1999 Dreamcast “complete editions.” The theme song is “Believe,” sung by Houko Kuwashima, who also voiced Momohime.

Sentai Reveals Two New Titles

Sentai Filmworks has revealed its acquisition of the CANAAN and Kimikiss ~ pure rouge anime television series.

The first 13 episodes of the 24 episode Kimikiss romantic drama will be released on October 5 in a subtitled DVD volume retailing at $49.98.

The complete 13 episode action/gunplay mystery series CANAAN will be released in a bilingual DVD collection retailing at $59.98 and Blu-ray release retailing at $69.98 on October 26.

Just for reference. CANAAN kicks ass.

New Negima OAD Trailer

Japanese publisher Kodansha has released a trailer for the fourth Maho Sensei Negima! ~Mou Hitotsu no Sekai~ OAD. The fourth of five planned “Magic World” OADs will be released with limited edition copies of Ken Akamatsu’s 31st compiled volume of Negima manga on August 17.

Vertical Acquires Lychee Light Club

Vertical has announced its acquisition of translation & distribution rights to Usamaru Furuya’s 2005 single-volume horror manga Lychee Light Club (Litchi Hikari Club). The story revolves around nine boys school students that create a lychee fruit powered machine to find beautiful women. The macine gains sentience and begins not only measuring beauty but delivering “justice” on those that don’t measure up. The official English translation will be released on April 29, 2011.

Square Enix Announces International Digital Manga Store

Japanese manga and game publisher Square Enix has announced plans to launch a digital manga store in North America and France this fall. Square Enix currently distributes free sample chapters of the Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Kuroshitsuhi, and O-Parts Hunter manga series. However, Square Enix Digital Publishing spokesman Koutarou Ishii has cautioned that titles offered as free samples may not be an accurate representation of the selection that will be available for future commerical purchase. Furthermore, the retail offerings in the North American and French initiatives will differ to respect the titles already available in respective areas.

Yumekui Merry Anime in Development

The latest issue of Manga Time Kirara Forward magazine includes a formal announcement that Yoshitaka Ushiki’s fantasy adventure manga series Yumekui Merry is being adapted into an anime television series. The manga series about a high school boy with the ability to enter people’s dreams has been ongoing since 2008.

Viz Acquires Detroit Metal City Movie

Second SRW TV Series Revealed

The latest issue of Dengeki Hobby Magazine has formally revealed the development of “Super Robot Taisen OG: The Inspector,” the first Super Robot Wars anime since the 2006 Super Robot Taisen OG: Divine Wars television series. As widely suspected, Masami Obari (Gravion, Dancougar) is directing. Unlike the 2006 series that was animated by OLM, this fall’s second television series is being animated by Production Reed (formerly known as “Ashi Productions”), the studio behind Maso Kishin Cybuster, the first anime adaptation of the Super Robot Taisen video game franchise, and robot anime including Dancougar, Goshogun, Dorvack, and Ginguiser.

Second Love Live Trailer

Record label Lantis has released a second trailer for the upcoming debut single from anime anime multimedia franchise Love Live. The “Bokura no Live Kimi to no Life” (“My Live & Your Life”) CD single with anime music video will go on sale August 25, with advance copies sold on August 13 at Comic Market 78.

Japanese Government Offers Training Opportunity to Foreign Animators

The Japan Image Council and the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs have launched the Animation Artist in Residence program, which will offer three applicants room and board for 75 days in Tokyo for education & training aimed at enabling the participants to create part or all of a new animated work by the end of their stay. The program is open to any non-Japanese artist applicant aged 20-35 that has screened at least one work at any international film festival. Applicants must also speak Japanese or English well enough to get by in Tokyo. The deadline for applications is September 10, 2010. The training program will be conducted from January and March 2011. Travel and living expenses will be paid for the selected applicants, and opportunities to interact with Japanese creators will be provided. The The Japan Image Council’s goal is to “Promote both the creation of excellent works of animation and a better understanding of Japanese culture.”

To refresh your memory or introduce you to an interesting opening animation sequence, I offer the first opening of the 1995 Nurse Angel Ririka SOS. The theme song is “Koi wo Suru Tabi ni Kizutsukiyasuku” performed by Suirei.

Look carefully and you’ll spot a shot in this opening that was parodied in yesterday’s Sugoiyo! Masaru-san opening. (Both series were directed by Akitaro Daichi.)
