New Jungle Emperor Anime Announced

The Fuji TV network has revealed the development of a new Jungle Emperor TV special based on the Osamu Tezuka’s beloved 1950 manga series. The new special, written by Osamu Suzuki, screenwriter of the Lovely Complex live action film, will be an entirely original story introducing a white lion cub raised in an artificial “Neo Jungle” who vows to grow up to become the jungle emperor. While the new special will have no direct continuity connection to Tezuka’s Jungle Emperor manga and anime, it will concentrate on a similar story and the themes of family, friendship, and environmental issues that characterized Tezuka’s original work. The special will commemorate the Fuji TV network’s 50th anniversary, and the 80th anniversary of Osamu Tezuka’s birth. Tezuka passed away in 1989.

Code Geass director Goro Taniguchi, Minoru Nishida, art director for the Kiku-chan to Okami TV special and the Hi no Tori TV series, and acclaimed painter Yoshitaka Amano have all been confirmed to work on the new TV special.

Ask John: Are There Any Male & Female Characters That Share Names?

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Question:
While currently re-watching 1999′s BETTERMAN, it just occurred to me that the titular male character shares the same name as the principal female character from 1984′s puppet-action series, STAR FLEET – namely, “Lamia.”

Is this one of those very rare instances where that has happened, or are you aware of other occasions where male and female characters in the world of anime – even across different series and settings – share the same name?

Japanese Studios Admit Financial Victimization

Monday, January 26th, 2009

The Japan Fair Trade Commission last week issued a report detailing findings of potentially illegal contract manipulation imposed on Japanese anime production studios by anime sponsors. Out of 114 anime production studios that responded to inquiries from the Trade Commission, 42.4% admitted that companies that have commissioned the production of anime have insisted upon paying unreasonably low compensation and demanded production schedules that ignored reasonable holidays and time off for animation studio employees. Furthermore, according to some responses, commissioning companies canceled work requests without explanation and refused to compensate animators for work already completed. These “preposterously low” commission payments and unreasonable demands for work from sponsoring companies, if true, violate Japanese anti-monopoly laws.

62.8% of the anime production studios that replied to the Trade Commission inquiry are small companies with less than $100,000 in capital. 63.7% of the responding companies employ 100 or less workers. 30.1% of the companies have 10 or less employees.

Yet another sad piece of evidence that Japanese animators work for love of the art form and not for living wages. While the number of anime productions being made is at an all time high, corporate sponsors are evidently paying animation studios slave wages to produce all these anime.
