Video Store Magazine Confirms Size of American Anime Market

The January 18-24, 2004 issue of Video Store Magazine has published a breakdown of 2003’s American home video market statistics.

Anime accounted for only 1.8% of the total home video sales in America last year.

80% of the anime sold in America in 2003 was on DVD. The remaining 20% was VHS.

There were no anime titles in the top 50 home video rentals of 2003, nor were there any anime titles in the top 25 DVD or VHS best sellers. (Video Store Magazine’s charts only listed the top 50 rentals and top 25 DVD & VHS sales.)

In fact, no foreign films whatsoever broke into 2003’s lists of most successful American home video releases.
