Update on R1 Legend of Galactic Heroes DVD Release

Wright Staff Co. of Japan has issued a message to North American anime fans regarding the possible official American release of the massive Legend of the Galactic Heroes (LoGH) anime saga (which encompasses 110 TV episodes, 54 side-story episodes, 3 motion pictures, and supplemental DVD material). The Japanese LoGH anime producers have officially confirmed that the series is presently only licensed for home video distribution in Japan, so all current DVD versions originating in Hong Kong, Taiwan and other Asian countries are unlicensed bootlegs. And purchase of these pirated DVDs “can be harmful to anime creators, companies and everyone involved in making legitimate releases available.”

The LoGH R1 DVD poll still has not received the 1500 submissions it was looking for, but response has been strong enough that Wright Staff Co. is seriously considering a limited edition, subtitled only American DVD release of the LoGH anime in a set that would retail for $1,700 rather than the originally estimated $1,925.
