Saint Tail Status Change

Apparently due to lower than anticipated sales, TOKYOPOP has announced some significant changes for their home video release of Mysterious Thief St. Tail. Beginning with volume 5 the series will become a subtitled only release, and each DVD volume will increase from 4 to 7 episodes per disc. The price per DVD volume will remain at $29.99 per disc.

The announcement of nearly double the number of episodes per DVD for the same price is great news for anime fans. However, the cancellation of the dub track and this contraction of the originally estimated number of DVDs can be considered a clear sign that shoujo anime has still not found a place in the consciousness of mainstream American consumers.

TOKYOPOP has yet to mention any plans to remaster the first St. Tail DVD, though, which has been widely criticized by fans for its heavily edited dubbed dialogue, digital overlay editing, removal of interior opening and ending credits and exclusion of the original, appropriate Japanese vocal theme songs.
