Results of Japanese Xbox Launch Unimpressive

After its first week of availability in Japan, the Xbox has sold 123,334 units, or roughly only half of its initial release quantity. By comparison, the Gamecube sold roughly 50,000 more units at launch than the Xbox did, and the PS2 launch of several years ago dwarfed the Xbox launch by more than a half million units. While the Xbox sold 123,334 units at Japanese launch, the PS2 sold 680,000 units at launch!

On average Japanese consumers bought less than 2 games for each Xbox console sold this past week. Dead or Alive 3 dominated sales with over 73,000 copies sold. The next best selling title, Genma Onimusha attracted only 19,600 sales. The highly anticipated Jet Set Radio Future managed only 9800 copies sold in the first week of release.
