Nintendo President Threatens to Cancel GameCube

Hiroshi Yamauchi, who has previously made headlines by publicly refusing to allow Squaresoft to create new games on Nintendo hardware and claiming that every console gaming company other than Nintendo is apparently heading for financial collapse, has once again made a highly surprising public announcement. At a Tokyo press conference held yesterday, Yamauchi revealed that, “if the GameCube is not received well at E3, our strategy will be compromised, and that will cause a serious blow to our plans. We may even have to consider pigeonholing the sale of GameCube.” Essentially Yamauchi is threatening that he may delay the release of the GameCube console indefinitely if he’s not pleased with the response the new system gets from the gaming industry at next month’s E3 convention in Las Angeles.
