New Statistics on Working Conditions of Japanese Animators Uncovered

The Daily Yomiuri Newspaper has reported the findings of Japanese entertainment industry representation organization “Geidankyo” regarding the working conditions of average Japanese animators. Based on survey responses from 83 Japanese animators:

The average work day is 10.2 hours.
26.8% of respondants earn less than 1 million yen (approx. $8,577) annually.
19.6% of respondants earn less than 2 million yen (approx. $17,154) annually.
18.6% of respondants earn less than 3 million yen (approx. $25,725) annually.

80% of respondants are paid an average of 186.9 yen (approx. $1.60) per frame of animation drawn.

78.4% of respondants claim that they “had pride” (“pride wo motteiru”) when they became professional animators, but 49.5% of respondants believe that the compensation for their work is unsatisfactory.

Geidankyo spokesman Shigeru Yamato stated that the improvement of working conditions for Japan’s animators is an important problem to be addressed.
