New Manga Creates International Outrage

A new manga first released in Japan this past July 26th, is creating controversy within Japan and tense international relationships between Japan and Korea. “Kenkanryu,” the manga whose title translates directly as “Hating Things South Korean,” has become a best selling manga with 100,000 copies in print in less than two months of release. The manga illustrates a strong Japanese nationalistic, anti-Korean sentiment. The manga was released at the current height of a new Japanese trend of fascination with Korean television programs and actors. Several Japanese publishers refused to publish “Kenkanryu” out of fear of its potential for controversy. And South Korea’s three largest newspapers have published editorials condemning the manga.
