New Japanese Top 100 Anime List Revealed

The May 26th episode of TV Asahi’s popular “Kore ga Nihon no Best 100” (These Are Japan’s Best 100) program compiled viewer votes to determine the top 100 anime ever. Classics overwhelmingly dominate the list, with the only 4 TV titles titles and 2 movies from within the past 5 years making it onto the list: King of Games Yu-Gi-Oh from 1998, the currently on-air Ojamajo Doremi Dokkan (Ojamajo Doremi season 4), Pocket Monster (currently broadcasting new episodes), and Tottoko Hamutaro represent current and recent TV anime and Mononoke Hime and Spirited Away represent recent theatrical anime. Also interesting is the fact that Hanna-Barbera’s American Tom & Jerry cartoon from 1975 made it onto the list at #39. (While in America the term “anime” refers exclusively to Japanese animation, in Japan the word “anime” refers animation of any style or origin.)
