Laputa to be a Direct To Video Release?

Upcoming Movies has reported that Hayao Miyazaki’s Laputa: Castle in the Sky will receive a direct to home-video release within the next year. This report is new, but Upcoming Movies lists no source for confirmation of this statement. The Walt Disney Company has completed an English language dub of Laputa, complete with an updated musical score from Joe Hisaishi, and has screened the new dub theatrically (for one weekend, at a single theater in New York City) last year. No word directly from Disney has come to light whatsoever regarding the possible American home video release of Castle in the Sky.

Upcoming Movies states, “One reported reason that Disney abbreviated the title for this 1999 rerelease is that ‘Laputa’ is a profanity in Spanish.” The name “Laputa,” and the concept of a city floating in the sky, were taken directly from a brief allusion in Johnathan Swift’s Neo-Classical novel Gulliver’s Travels, first published in 1726.
