Japanese Government to Support Anime Internationally

Providing further evidence that anime is legitimate contemporary art, the advisory arm of the Japanese Ministry of Education and Science released a preliminary report on November 28th announcing its plans to promote international awareness and recognition of modern Japanese art in forms including manga, anime and movies. The Japanese cabinet is expected to develop a plan for the support and promotion of manga and anime internationally from 2003 through 2008 during a meeting early this month.

This new governmental backing of the Japanese anime industry suggests that at least in Japan, anime and manga are considered more than mere “toy commercials” and “children’s cartoons.”
