Japanese Animators Still Value Art Over Science

Japan Today has published a wonderfully informative article on the state of CG and digital animation in the contemporary anime industry, focusing primarily on Production IG and Studio Ghibli. Through interviews with animators including Hayao Miyazaki and Production IG president Mitsuhisa Ishikawa it becomes clear that Japanese animators still highly value the skill, craftsmanship and art of hand drawn animation and have no intention of fully abandoning hand drawn animation, even though hand painted cels are quickly becoming extinct. The article also discusses the creative freedom and creative control animators have over their work in Japan, furthermore implying that anime is as much, if not more, art than it is manufactured commercial product.
