Hayao Miyazaki Announces His Retirement (Again)

Hayao Miyazaki

This past Sunday at the Venice Film Festival, Studio Ghibli President Koji Hoshino announced that studio founder and acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki is retiring from directing feature length films. The 72-year-old director’s 11th feature, Kaze Tachinu, is currently dominating the Japanese box office. Miyazaki first announced his retirement in 1998. During a 2008 press conference following the release of Gake no Ue no Ponyo, Miyazaki stated, “I feel I’m already retired.” This latest retirement announcement does not preclude Miyazaki from continuing to develop short films.
