Fuse Gansaku Anime Movie Announced

Japanese book distributor Taiyosha claims that an anime film adaptation of Kazuki Sakuraba’s latest novel, Fuse Gansaku: Satomi Hakkenden, is in development. The novel is Sakuraba’s reinterpretation of author Kyokutei Bakin’s ninteenth century 106 volume novel series Nanso Satomi Hakkenden, now considered one of the classics of Japanese literature. The original 1814-1842 novel series has been adapted into anime twice before, as the 1990 OVA series Hakkenden and the 1999 sci-fi television series Shin Hakkenden. Ko Amami and Aki Kuruwa’s yaoi manga adaptation of the story, Gakuen Hakkenden, also has an anime adaptation presently in development.

Author Kazuki Sakuraba may be better known to American readers as the author of the Gosick (“Gothic”) mystery novel series, which presently has a TV anime adaptation in development.
