FUNimation Reveals Release Plans
During this past weekend’s Anime Boston convention, FUNimation announced plans for a September 22 premiere release of Sgt. Frog (Keroro Gunso) season 1 part 1. The series’ numerous references to other anime, particularly Mobile Suit Gundam, will not be censored. FUNimation hasn’t yet decided if these references will be explained in liner notes or on-disc subtitles.
FUNimation also announced its English dub cast for the Evangelion 1.0 motion picture. Actors including Spike Spencer, Allison Keith, and John Swasey will be reprising their roles from AD Vision’s English dub of the director’s cut TV episodes. Monica Rial will return, although now playing Pen-Pen rather than her former character Maya Ibuki.

Why would they need to censor Gundam jokes? Those are a dime-a-dozen, and Bandai probably thinks it helps promote their series better.
Why bother redubbing Pen Pen? Does he have lines during the movie that need translation?!
I suppose I have the same question about the Evangelion.
Japanese distributors are really touchy about potential copyright infringement suits. Really touchy. Even though Toho is the Japanese distributor for both Godzilla and the Miami Guns anime, when I was working on Miami Guns, Toho prohibited me from mentioning “Godzilla” by name in the Miami Guns liner notes.
And Pen-Pen has to be re-dubbed in the new movie because his scenes in the movie are original shots that aren’t in any of the previous animation.
I ask if Pen Pen has to be redubbed because I don’t see the difference between a penguin that doesn’t speak Japanese and a penguin that doesn’t speak English. Even 4Kids kept the original sound/voice for Pikachu in their release of Pokemon. I have no desire to hear an American penguin over an Asian one.
