Ask John: Will the Legendary Legend Continue?

Question:
I just got done watching The Legend of the Legendary Heroes. And I love it, but it ends weird, and I can’t find any info about a 2nd season. So are they going to do a 2nd season?

Answer:
The Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu television series ended very recently, so while no word of a second series has been announced yet, such an announcement could come at any time. However, I don’t fully anticipate such an announcement. The television series seems to have been moderately successful in Japan, and in America where it was simulcast online. But the show did not become a breakout hit, and it doesn’t seem to have earned much fan following. A second series certainly is within the realm of possibility, but the measured success of the first series suggests that there’s probably not enough interest in or support for a second series to encourage or justify a production. Original “DenYuDen” author Takaya Kagami’s current novel series Itsuka Tenma no Kuro Usagi has an anime adaptation in development right now, so the author’s work is definitely viable for continued anime adaptation. However, that very development may suggest that the anime production industry is more interested in testing the waters with another of Kagami’s titles rather than trying to continue adapting the DenYuDen franchise.

Sequel series sometimes surface unexpectedly. I absolutely didn’t foresee the recent announcement of a second Kaiji television series, nor the confirmation of a second Nurarihyon no Mago television series. However, anime series typically get second series when their first season was popular or successful. Kaiji was successful enough to get a live action film adaptation. Nurarihyon no Mago developed a small, yet still bigger than DenYuDen’s, fan following in Japan. Last year’s Mitsudomoe became a cult hit, leading to its current second series. Kimi ni Todoke was likewise a popular hit, leading to its current second series. Last year’s Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu television series doesn’t seem like it’s been successful or popular enough to warrant a second series. But we all could be surprised by an unexpected future announcement.
