Ask John: What is Sexy Commando?

Question:
What is “Sexy Commando”? Other than it being directed by Akitaro Daichi, news on the anime is very sparse. Will we ever get to see it?

Answer:
48 ten minute long episodes of Sexy Commando Gaiden: Sugioyo Masaru-san were broadcast between January 5th and April 2, 1998, as part of the live action variety program Wonderful. This is the same program that broadcast anime series including the Akitaro Daichi directed Momoiro Sisters, You’re Under Arrest Special, Ippatsu Kikimusume, the Yume de Aetera TV series, and the first Di-Gi-Charat TV series. AD Vision has acquired the translation rights to the You’re Under Arrest Special, Colorful, and Papa to Odorou TV series that were broadcast during Wonderful. Media Blasters has licensed the Yume de Aetara TV series that was broadcast during Wonderful. Urban Vision released the 4 episode Petshop of Horrors TV series that was broadcast during Wonderful. So there’s plenty of precedent for Wonderful Anime programs to be released in America. However, Wonderful titles including Itsumo Kokoro ni Taiyo Wo, Ippatsu Kikimusume, Surfside Highschool, Nippon-ichi no Otoko no Tamashii, Futari Gurashi, Momoiro Sisters, Super Radical Gag Family, and Iketeru Futari, just to name a few, have not been licensed for American release, so there’s really no way to guess whether or not the strange Sexy Commando comedy series will ever make it to American release.

To quote a bit from AnimeNFO, Sugioyo Masaru-san is a strange and wacky comedy about Fumiya Okometsubu, who transfers into Wakame High School just in time to inadvertently become “friends” with Masaru Hananakajima, master of the bizarre “sexy commando” martial art fighting style. Sight gags and strange situations including, “the Baseball Game of Honor, the Alien Camping Trip, and the National Sexy Commando Tournament” ensue.
