Ask John: What is Ippatsu Kikimusume?

Question:
What is Ippatu Kikimusume? This is one of the most bizarre anime that I’ve seen lately. Who creates this low quality (it seems from a poor studio of the 80s) anime and is there a big audience for it? Is it some kind of new style along with Sugoyo Masaru-san?

Answer:
Ippatsu Kikimusume is based on a manga series by Shigemitsu Harada. The animation consisted of 16 episodes, each of them only about 4 minutes long. The episodes were broadcast in Japan back in October 1999 during the Wonderful variety program, the same program that also broadcast anime series including Colorful, Legend of Sexy Commando Sugoiyo Masaru-san, Momoiro Sisters, Petshop of Horrors, You’re Under Arrest Special and the first Di-Gi-Charat TV series. Loosely translated, Ippatsu Kiki Musume is known as “Danger Girl,” and the manga and its animation both consist of short vignettes involving main character Kunyan getting into and out of bizarre, dangerous situations including being eaten by a massive python snake and getting herself inextricably tied up in sexual fetish bondage gear just before the door-to-door saleslady comes to visit.
