Ask John: Is Gravitation Coming to America?

Question:
I have recently begun to watch the shounen-ai anime Gravitation and I was surprised at how good it is. I especially like the music of the series. I was just wondering if this series has been licensed yet. I wonder if the fact that because homosexuality is prevalent in the series companies view it as unmarketable.

Answer:
For some reason, over the past two weeks or so, everybody seems to have discovered Gravitation. I’ve been getting a lot of questions similar to yours all of a sudden. Here at AnimeNation we haven’t heard of any plans for this TV series or OAV series to come to America. The fact that it is a yaoi show, though, may not actually be much of a stumbling block for a possible American release. Media Blasters has already released the lightly shonen-ai OAV series Fake, and they’re preparing to release the yaoi Level C. Kizuna is already available in America, and CPM has now licensed the heavily shonen-ai Yami no Matsui TV series. If Level C and Yami no Matsui perform well in sales upon their eventual release, you can probably expect to see other similar shows translated in an attempt to cash in on the same market, including possibly Gravitation.
