Ask John: How Much Dragonball Is There?

Question:
How many movies, OAVs and series are there for Dragonball?

Answer:
For completists and fans that are simply curious, the original Dragonball TV series had 153 episodes. Dragonball Z had 291 episodes, and Dragonball GT had 64 episodes. Dragonball Z also had 2 TV specials, “Bardock: Lonely Final Battle” and “Last Remaining Soldiers, Gohan and Trunks.” Dragonball GT had one TV special titled “Goku’s Biography! The 4-Star Dragon Ball is Proof of Courage.”

There were 4 original Dragonball movies:

Legend of Shenron
Sleeping Beauty in Devil Castle
Great Adventure in Penguin Village
Path of the Strongest (the 10th anniversary movie, actually DB movie 17)

Dragonball Z had 13 theatrical films:

Return My Gohan
World’s Strongest
Great Whole Earth Battle
Super Saiyajin Goku
Strongest vs. Strongest
Attack! 10 Billion Power Soldiers!
Ultimate Battle! 3 Super Saiyajin
Hard Fight! Violent Fight! Super Severe Fight!
Ginga Giri Giri! From the Edge of the Galaxy, the Super Amazing Guy!
Dangerous Pair! Super Warriors Never Sleep
Super Soldier Flash! I Will be the Winner!
Revival Fusion! Goku and Vegeta
Dragon Fist Explosion! If Goku Can’t do it, Who Can?

In late 1994 Bandai released a pair of Dragonball Z video games for its short lived Playdia video game console- “Dragonball Z Gaiden: Saiyajin Setsu Metsu Keikaku Chikyuu Hen” and “Dragonball Z Gaiden: Saiyajin Setsu Metsu Keikaku Uchuu Hen,” or “Dragonball Z Side Story: Plan to Eliminate the Saiyajins” Earth Chapter and Space Chapter. These two games were essentially interactive movies. When completed, they could be played back and watched as a pair of 25 minute long episodes that made up a single 50 minute long movie. Because both games were made to the quality standards of the Dragonball Z TV animation, and both games consist of entirely original animation and story, they are often mistaken for being Dragonball Z OAVs.

And finally, the Final Bout Playstation game has a nice, original FMV anime opening sequence. That about wraps it up for the Dragonball anime.
