Ask John: Can You Explain the Ending of Chobits?

Question:
SPOILER ALERT

The ending of chobits confused me a bit and I feel I need a couple things explained.

  • Who are Jima and Dita? Why do they want to exterminate Chii?
  • They said something about Chii being made to be the link between the happiness of people and persocons. Wat does this mean?
  • Chii activated some sorta program when she finds happiness. What exactly did the program do?
  • Lastly, what exactly is a Chobits? Was it just a rumor? Did they exist? And if there is such thing as Chobits, Chii isnt one of them, right?

Answer:
SPOILER ALERT

It’s been a while since I watched the ending of Chobits, but if I recall correctly, the ending of the series explains that Chi and her older sister Freya (Black Chi) are the two legendary Chobits series persocoms that have the ability to think independently and feel emotions like humans. They are the missing link between humans and machines. The two Chobits series computers were created by Hibiya Chitose and her husband Mihara Ichirou on behalf of a powerful corporation that funded their research. It seems logical to assume that Dita and Jima were created by the same company as a back-up protection against the Chobits computers. Since the Chobits series persocoms have the ability to communicate with, and affect, all persocoms, Jima exists to prevent the Chobits persocoms from going out of control or doing anything that could have a negative ripple effect on all persocoms. At the end of the Chobits TV series, Chi has the option of accepting or denying love. Her refusal of love could spread, like a virus, to all persocoms. But when Chi finally does discover true happiness, her programming sends out a signal to all persocoms, awakening them all to the knowledge that an equal relationship between humans and persocoms is truly possible.
