Anime Recognized as Art

Fans of anime and contemporary Japanese pop art especially will be pleased to learn that the touring “My Reality: Contemporary Art and the Culture of Japanese Animation” exhibition will be coming to the Tampa Museum of Art from April 21st until June 23rd.

The nationally touring exhibition is largely a presentation of Japanese modern art featuring concepts of “futuristic technology, cyborgs and other humanoid robotics, aliens and fantastical creatures, and post-apocalyptic landscapes.” The exhibit includes art ranging from “Paul McCarthy’s cartoon characters” to “Takashi Murakami’s bizarre anime-inspired sculpture to Momoyo Torimitsu’s enormous balloon rabbits.”

The month long Tampa Museum of Art exhibit will include lectures, anime and origami creation workshops, an “avant garde anime-inspired party,” anime film festival screenings, and more.
