Akira Hits #1 in Sales

According to Digital Media FX, Akira was America’s best selling DVD for the week ending July 29th. The film was officially re-released to home video by Pioneer on the 24th.

According to ICv2.com, the limited tin edition of the Akira DVD has now sold out at the wholesale level. Pioneer announced that they had sold out of all 100,000 copies to wholesalers two weeks before the June 24th street date. Now, little over a week after street date, wholesale companies including Diamond Comics, who heavily stocked copies, report that their inventories are exhausted. Copies of the tin edition are already selling on Ebay for slightly over the $39.99 MSRP although the limited edition DVD has not yet sold out at the consumer retail store level.
