8th Annual Japanese Otaku Award Winners Announced

The winners of the 8th Annual Japanese Otaku Awards were presented at Tokyo’s Loft/Plus One hall on January 8. The award winners are selected by a panel of 8 judges from among the year’s “otaku” highlights.


Grand Prix Award
Shigeru Mizuki’s “Kitaro” anime, including Hakaba Kitaro and the 5th Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro TV anime

Ryota Fujitsu Award (Fujitsu is a noted Japanese animation critic)
Hideyuki Kurata’s Kurahon Kurata no Kuradashi manga series

Harayasa Tokaimura Award
figure sculptor Masaki Asai (designer of the Gunnm Gaiden “Gally” figure)

Hidekuni Shida Award (Scenario writer for the Metal Gear video game series)
Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G PSP game

Masumi Kurata Award (Journalist)
Junjo Romantica anime series

Hisashi Maeda Award
true tears anime series

Hosai Tsuruoka Award (manga critic)
Tengirl (anthropomorphized Tenga brand “onanie hole” sex toys)

Shinya Yamada Award (animator)
Everyone at “moe-kabu” companies (companies that contributed to the growth of the “moe” otaku trend)

Naoki Ishiguro Award (manga editor)
Kozue Amano’s Aria manga series and its anime adaptation
