4Kids Still Has Yu-Gi-Oh, For Now

United States Bankruptcy Judge Shelley C. Chapman ruled Thursday that Nihon Ad Systems (NAS), TV Tokyo, and ADK have not properly terminated 4Kids’ distribution license for the Yu-Gi-Oh property; therefore, 4Kids’ does presently still have legal rights to continue marketing the show. The Japanese rights holders originally reported nine instances of 4Kids not paying or underpaying royalties, yet seven of those instances were later withdrawn or deemed mistaken. Chapman ruled that any one of the seven exceptions is sufficient to nullify the terms of the license termination. Chapman also ruled that the Japanese rights owners did not sufficiently warn 4Kids of plans to terminate the license agreement nor provide 4Kids adequate time to redress the greviences.
