New Soul Eater Dub Sample Released
FUNimation has released another sample of its English dub of the Soul Eater TV series, this one revealing the English voices of characters Black Star & Tsubaki, played by Brittney Karbowski & Monica Rial, respectively. The first DVD collection will be released next year.
No offense intended to those who watch and enjoy English dubbed anime, but this sample is precisely why I’m glad that I don’t watch dubbed anime.

If FUNimation isn’t distributing SOUL EATER until 2010, are they hoping these infrequent little blips will keep hyping the show until then? Well, whatever works…
With almost all of the anime I watch, I view the series with both language dialogue tracks… Dubbing has obviously come a long way over the past 10+ years, but I think it’s rather amusing to find a dub track every once in a while that give me the impression that the writers and ADR directors are trying too hard. It’s the uncanny-valley of voice acting… should it ever exist.
Well said John. No offence to english voice actors that do anime but you are really bad. There are some decent dubs here and there, in games that is, a few rpgs particularly but I am glad I dont watch dubbed anime either.
While its a fact Japanese dubs and the voice actors are galaxies apart in terms of quality, its not really a matter of the “superior japanese dub” but a rather that things should be watched in their original dub, dubs good or bad they alter the original work (subs too but a LOT less). So I am against any dubs of any works so if possible I always watch them in their original language.
While surely not always the case its probably just a matter of lazy viewers that dont want to bother reading subs and taking the easy path, some argue they miss things reading but I have yet to experience that problem and I dont believe I am a genius when tit comes to reading subs nor I believe it requires some kind of skill level not to consider them distracting.
Oh well, let them continue enjoying dubs while others let us continue enjoying anime as much as possible in their original form. Everyone is free to watch things however they like, I wont arque that.
The idea that most anime dubs are poor is a terribly outdated one. Every dub is worth checking out, I think, even if it’s not your personal preference. There are a lot of exceptional dubs out there, some I’ve even liked better than the Japanese. Sometimes English is just better suited to the setting.
While I mostly watch not-yet-licensed fansubs, I would say in general that I prefer dubbed anime. I like hearing both takes on a character, especially if I’ve read the manga as well.
While I don’t find a preference for the original language track offensive, calling someone lazy because they like or prefer dubbed anime is over the top. Some of us just like hearing how a show has been translated and acted and hearing different takes on characters. Also, I think both subs and dubs miss certain nuances of the original language track, and I appreciate the additional content i get from that.
In this particular case, I don’t really mind it. BlackStar’s an annoying character, and a properly annoying voice is necessary. That way when he gets cool later, it has meaning.
Just as I’m glad that many shows are coming out here without dubs to better suit their target market, I’m also glad that dubs are still around because there have been some really good ones over the years and I’d hate to see that stop.
Yeah the fandom seems to be barking the same words over and over again. There are good and bad on both sides. I’ve seen some terrible Japanese voice actors who just fail to bring a character to life whether it be not enough motion in an emotional scene or just a voice that clearly doesn’t suit the character. It comes down to preference. A lot of the time fans are like “oh yeah, Japanese w/subs is totally better” having never heard a English dub in their life. That is like saying ‘Vanilla’ is better than ‘Chocolate’ when you have never tried Chocolate; it doesn’t make much sense.
I’ll admit that so far some of FUNimations dubs haven’t impressed me so much yet but “Geneon” did a great job on some anime.
As an example goes I’ve watched whole series in Japanese and English finding little bits and pieces great about both of them while other series the Japanese is clearly better or vice versa. If anime was all about the Japanese dub there would be no point in importing it, might as have Japan add subs to all their anime and have people pay the ridiculous prices for 2 episodes a disc over there(thats a whole other topic).
Generally English Dubs are alright and in some cases better than the Japanese version. It just takes patience and preference to find a sub or dub you like…
What a fucking joke…..jeez…when I watched this on the net in japanses w/english subtitles, it was amazing. The voices were mature and everything was just right….this english dub makes me not even want to watch it…just like how bleach’s voice actors suck balls. Anyways, I suppose it’s just opinion…but I guess I’ll write a story on it later. Nice post.
I personally like to give English dubs a chance, and sometimes I’m pleasantly surprised. Pioneer did a lot of solid English dubs back in the day, and I’ll most likely watch those shows in English. I can’t really get behind ADV’s voicework though; some of the voice actor/actoresses are too distinct for audiences to ignore (Hillary Hagg, I’m looking at you). Anime Works is generally not so hot either.
Funimation has some solid actors, but the issue I have is this emo-esque trend with having cool, soft-spoken voices for the more egimatic teenage males. It’s something that I’m sure appeals to teenage girls, but I’m beginning to think is being a little overused. Not a big deal, just something I’ve noticed.
I have yet find an anime that has bad Japanese voices, dont fit the character or are bad at expression emotion. I never said it was the rule that all were lazy, but I have found so far that people say they dont want to focus on reading subs and rather give all the attention on what is going on in the screen.
That english dubs are bad IS NOT outdated its FACT, well, in many cases, as I clearly said there are exceptions, but the number of really good dubs is a samall amount, I have only found exceptional dubs in rpgs, and decent ones at most in anime but Afro Samurai’s was exceptional thou, but that is expected when you have real talented and professional people doing the work.
Who said anything about voices being annoying? Its a matter of them being bad, not fitting the character(s) at all, overacting and sounding emotionless, some of you question that I may not give english dubs a chance or i dont know them at all, well, i care less about actors anmes, I dont know them sincerely, but I DO try check them out for a little, just to remind me how bad they are!! Of course I am not a masochist to hear a dub for more than an episode or 2, sorry but a dub should be good from second 1, not from the 2nd, 3rd, 4th episode.
The worst part is that english voices just dont fit the characters, I dunno if I can tell because I am just too used to Japanese voices and casual people find japanese rare or something but seriously, english voices just DONT fit the character and many times dont fit the characters’ age. I repeat its not a matter of me hating overall english dubs, they are from ok to really good in many other realms but in anime I just find them bad.
Anyone beginning to see some strain on the part of Funimation (perhaps both time _and_ money??)??
