Hoshi Mamoru Inu Live Action Movie Announced

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Author Takashi Murakami’s 2008 manga Hoshi Mamoru Inu (Star Protector Dog) will get a live action feature film adaptation next year. The story revolves around a forensics expert that discovers that an unidentified man died in the mountains six months prior while the man’s loyal akita dog remained by his side until its death five months later. The movie will tentatively open next summer.

Akita dogs are evidently highly respected for their loyalty in Japan. The famously loyal Akita dog Hachiko is permanently honored by a statue in Shibuya, Tokyo.

Chargeman Ken! 40th Anniversary

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

An official website has just launched to commemorate the 1974 cult favorite anime television series Chargeman Ken! The series of 65 ten minute episodes went relatively unnoticed until 2007 when Japanese fans rediscovered the notoriously awful series and turned it into a cult favorite. The series about a young teen boy that defends the world against an inept alien invasion is characterized by terrible animation quality, out of synch sound effects, and highly questionably “heroic” actions from its hero. It’s the Musashi Gundoh of the 70′s.

The fascination with this show really is a little bizarre. I’ve watched some of it, and it is really awful. Actually, many of the anime TV series produced by the late Studio Knack have developed a satirical Japanese fan following. A good example of the goofy love for this yashigani anime follows:

IG Port, the parent company of anime studios Production I.G and Xebec, has announced that development of Titan Rain, Production I.G’s planned 3D anime film co-production with Singaporean studio Storm Lion Pictures, has been canceled. However, Production I.G is reportedly already at work on a new anime co-production with an unspecified Singapore based studio. And IG Port is now independently developing a stereoscopic 3D film, although it’s not specified if Production I.G, Xebec, or both studios are working on the project. The reason for the cancellation of Titan Rain has not been clarified.
