New Cencoroll Teaser Released

The official homepage for Atsuya Uki’s sci-fi adventure anime film Cencoroll has added a streaming 18 second teaser advertising the film’s August 22 theatrical opening in Tokyo and Osaka. Uki wrote, designed, directed, and animated the film himself. The Anime Innovation Tokyo initiative initially sponsored the production back in 2007.

Two promotional images have surfaced revealing “Suou Pavlichenko,” the 13-year-old half-Japanese half-Russian girl protagonist of Darker Than Black 2. The new TV anime is scheduled to premiere in October.

Kuchu Buranko Website Launched

The official website for Toei Animation’s upcoming 11 episode Kuchu Buranko anime television series has launched. While it’s presently just one page, it provides a rather startling key visual image.

The anime adaptation of Hideo Okuda’s award winning 2004 novel will premiere in October as Fuji TV’s 17th Noitamina series.

Third Shana TV Series Possible

A brief article in the latest issue of Animage Magazine quotes Shakugan no Shana anime producer Nobuhiro Nakayama saying that the upcoming Shakugan no Shana S OVA series lays the groundwork for a tentative final Shakugan no Shana anime production. Nakayama explains that the new OVA series is necessary to reveal certain character backgrounds as an introduction to a concluding anime series.

The first Shakugan no Shana S OVA will go on sale in Japan on October 23.

Viz to Launch Shonen Sunday Imprint

Viz Media will launch its Shonen Sunday imprint with the simultaneous Japanese and American publication of the first collected volume of Rumiko Takahashi’s Rin-ne manga on October 20. Select Viz Media titles including Inuyasha, Case Closed, Kekkaishi, Hayate the Combat Butler, and Yakitate!! Japan will be transitioned to the Shonen Sunday banner. And new acquisitions for the line will be formally announced on the 24th at the San Diego Comic Con.

The American publication of the first Rin-ne graphic novel will mark the first ever simultaneous American and Japanese publication of a collected manga volume.

The Shonen Sunday imprint is named after Viz Media parent company Kodansha’s highly successful Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, which released its first issue in March 1959.

Viz Media’s Shonen Sunday website will formally open on the 22nd.

Blood Teaser One Sheet Released

The Diva Review has published an exclusive interview with Bill Kong, producer behind the new Blood: The Last Vampire live action motion picture.

It’s gratifying to hear of Mr. Kong’s respect for the original property, and Ji-hyun Jeon’s devotion to the film. It’s just a shame that the finished movie suffers greatly from a budget too small to do the film justice.

Ask John: Where Are the Respectable Anime Licenses?

Question:
I’m glad that Nozomi licensed Aria the Origination but cannot understand why companies license Kenichi or Raoh Gaiden instead of Denno Coil and Higurashi Kai. It’s hard to believe anticipated sales would explain such decisions, so is it about asking price?

Break Blade Anime Announced

Japanese publisher Flex Comix has formally announced development of an anime adaptation of Yunosuke Yoshinaga’s fantasy mecha manga series Break Blade. The sixth volume of the Break Blade manga goes on sale in Japan this week. The first volume of the manga series was released in America yesterday, under the American title “Broken Blade.”

The manga serial premiered in Gekkan Shounen Blood Magazine in October 2006. Its sixth collected volume will go on sale in Japan this week. The Break Blade story revolves around Rygart Arrow, a young man whose ability to pilot an ancient, powerful robot makes him the pivitol point in a war in which he has personal friends on both sides of the conflict.

Kara no Kyoukai 7 Teaser Released

The official homepage for the Kara no Kyoukai ~ Garden of Sinners movie series has added a streaming 15 second teaser for the upcoming seventh and final movie, “Satsujin Kousatsu (gou)” (Murder Investigation second half), which directly continues of the story of the second movie. Kara no Kyoukai movie 7 will open in limited Japanese theatrical release on August 8.

Technically there are 8 Kara no Kyoukai movies including the Kara no Kyoukai Remix -Gate of seventh heaven- movie that summarizes the first six films.

TO Anime Announced

An official Japanese website has launched to announce the development of TO (pronounced “Tou”), an anime feature film adaptation of one of the stories from Yukinobu Hoshino’s 1984 space exploration drama manga 2001 Nights (2001 Ya Monotogari). Viz published an English translation of the manga in 1990. The manga was adapted into an hour long anime OVA by TMS Entertainment in 1987. The new film version will be directed by Vexille director Fumihiko Sori.

Kuchu Buranko Anime Announced

This week’s new issue of Newtype Magazine will formally announce that Toei Animation will produce an anime TV series adaptation of Hideo Okuda’s award winning 2004 novel Kuchu Buranko (Trapeze). The book is a collection of stories about psychiatrist Ichiro Irabu and the various patients he treats.

Anime director Kenji Nakamura and character designer/animation director Takashi Hashimoto, who worked together on the “Bakeneko” story arc of the Ayakashi – Samurai Horror Tales television series and its spin-off, Mononoke, will reunite in the same roles for the Kuchu Buranko anime. Like their previous Ayakashi and Mononoke series, Kuchu Buranko will air in the Fuji TV network’s late night “Noitamina” slot beginning this October, following Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and preceding Nodame Cantabile Finale.

New Shana Anime to be OVA

This week’s new issue of Newtype Magazine will formally announce that the new Shakugan no Shana anime first announced last month will be an OVA series. The first episode of Shakugan no Shana S will hit Japanese DVD and Blu-ray on October 23. The release will tentatively include the first episode, a bonus Shakugan no Shana-tan mini-episode, and an audio commentary track.

Nana & Honey & Clover on iTunes

Viz Media is now offering English dubbed episodes of its Nana & Honey & Clover anime television series through iTunes. The first episode of Honey & Clover is available free. Nana episodes 1-11.5 will be available exclusively from the iTunes digital download store until August 31. Both titles are accessible to consumers in North America only.

The first Nana DVD boxed set, containing episodes 1-11.5, will be released on September 9. The first Honey & Clover DVD boxed set will go on sale Septmber 22.

Digital Manga Acquires Yellow 2

Digital Manga’s 801 Media imprint has revealed plans for an English translated print version of Makoto Tateno’s boy-love manga sequel Yellow 2. The sequel to Tateno’s 2002 manga series has only been released in Japan as a digital comic for cel phones and other handheld communication devices. 801 Media will re-release the four volumes of the original Yellow manga series in two omnibus editions. The first chapter of Yellow 2 will be published as a roughly 60 page comic, hopefully in time for release at the Yaoicon 2009 convention.
