AN Entertainment has officially announced that its first Miami Guns DVD will be released on June 22nd. The official English language Miami Guns homepage opened today.

No Anime Nominated for Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced its nominees for the 2003 Oscars this morning. Regretfully for anime fans, no anime titles are included in the nominees for Best Animated Film. Satoshi Kon’s Milennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers were both front runners for Oscar nomination. Likewise, The AniMatrix was not selected as a final nominee in the category of Best Animated Short Film.

The final three nominees for Best Animated Film are Brother Bear, Finding Nemo, and The Triplets of Belleville.

Anime Network Available in Canada

Globe News has reported that Rogers Cable Inc. is now offering AD Vision’s Anime Network accessibility to Canadian digital cable subscribers.

The Anime Network in Canada currently offers 6 titles on a view-on-demand basis.

Rintaro to Speak at Chicago’s Japan Information Center

Rintaro, one of anime’s most esteemed directors, will be in Chicago to speak at the Japan Information Center on Wednesday, February 4th. The free lecture will take place at the JIC auditorium on the 10th floor of the Olympia Center building at 737 N. Michigan Ave at 6pm. There will be a reception following the lecture where attendees will be able to speak with Rintaro.

Rintaro will be speaking on the emergence of anime in Japan and its implications for Japanese and Western society. Among his social critique, Rintaro will provide insights into the present state of Japanese animation, including first-hand accounts of the personalities who have shaped—and continue to shape—the anime world.

SVC Chaos Coming to America

Jagged Team has reported that SNK Neo-Geo USA will release domestic Xbox versions of SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos and Metal Slug 3 later this year.

Comics One has also announced an April release for the first English translated SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos graphic novel. Comics One does not provide detailed creator information for the comic series, but it seems to be of Chinese origin as there doesn’t seem to be any existing SVC Chaos manga available in Japan.

Saiyuki Reload PS2 Game Scheduled

Bandai of Japan has officially announced that the Saiyuki Reload “communication RPG” will be released for the Japanese Playstation 2 on March 18th. The game will retail at 6,800 yen.

Video Store Magazine Confirms Size of American Anime Market

The January 18-24, 2004 issue of Video Store Magazine has published a breakdown of 2003’s American home video market statistics.

Anime accounted for only 1.8% of the total home video sales in America last year.

80% of the anime sold in America in 2003 was on DVD. The remaining 20% was VHS.

There were no anime titles in the top 50 home video rentals of 2003, nor were there any anime titles in the top 25 DVD or VHS best sellers. (Video Store Magazine’s charts only listed the top 50 rentals and top 25 DVD & VHS sales.)

In fact, no foreign films whatsoever broke into 2003’s lists of most successful American home video releases.

Pacific Media Expo Announces Second Manga Guest

The Pacific Media Expo, scheduled for May 29-31 in Anaheim, California, has announced that Chrno Crusade creator Daisuke Moriyama will attend the convention as a guest of honor. Moriyama is the convention’s second announced manga artist guest of honor, following Trigun creator Yasuhiro Nightow.

Natsuiro no Sunadokei Anime Announced

KSS of Japan has announced the production of a 2 episode OAV series adaptation of Natsuiro no Sunadokei, based on the Playstation dating simulation game of the same name. The first episode will be released on April 23rd.

On many Japanese magazines that I’ve seen, the cover models are sometimes holding a lemon. Is there any significance to this, such as a trademark to certain magazines, or is there some other reason for posing with one?
