Like in Final Fantasy 8, almost every bystander character in Final Fantasy 9 is a card-playing opponent. Players alternately place five cards on a square board (some spaces are randomly blocked, making them off-limits) and each card has its own icon and strength statistics. Each card also has a varying number of arrows that line the card&#8217;s edges with the more powerful cards having more arrows. You lay your card so one of its arrows points to an opponent&#8217;s card. If the enemy card doesn&#8217;t have an arrow pointing back, you gain control of that card. If the card does have an arrow, the two cards &#8220;battle&#8221; and the one with the higher statistics is the winner.
