Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi Opening

Hayao Miyazaki’s latest, and perhaps final full length anime film, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, or “Spirited Away,” as it’s now been deemed in English, is scheduled to open in Japanese theaters on the 20th. According to the July 5th Asahi Newspaper:

The story is close to Alice in Wonderland. Driving through a tunnel, 10 year old Chihiro and her family wander into a mysterious hot spring town where ghosts and spirits of all kinds assemble to heal their wounds. There she loses her name – she is referred to as Sen in the town- her selfish parents are turned into pigs and their daughter is ultimately forced to work for Yubaba, a witch who rules the town. Will Chihiro be able to recover her name and return to the world of humans?

Miyazaki has announced that he made the film particularly for today’s 10 year old girls who have lost their sense of “living” their own lives. Chihiro is a typical contemporary girl with skinny arms and legs, who finds no interest in anything. It is only through challenge, hardship and exceptional encounters with strange friends that Chihiro learns to live, gradually gaining the power to create her own life.”
