Pokemon Is and Isn’t Dying

According to ICv2 News, the popularity of Pokemon seems to diminishing in some respects, but in other ways still seems to be a strong market force. Last week Pokemon fell out of the top 50 most commonly searched-for topics on the Lycos search engine for the first time since 1999. Warner Bros., who distributed the first three Pokemon theatrical films in America, has decided not to license movies 4 & 5 for American release. But while these signs seem to suggest that the “Pokemon fad” is dying in America, other signs seem to suggest that Pokemon is nowhere near disappearing in America.

Miramax has acquired the American theatrical and home video distribution rights to Pokemon movies 4 & 5. The Pokemon CCG continues to be one of the 10 best selling collectable card games on the market, Viz continues to publish Pokemon manga translations, and Warner has scheduled another season of the animation for American television broadcast next year.
