On Obscure DVDs
The increasing scarcity of certain domestic anime DVDs has surfaced as a topic of conversation in the American otaku community lately, so here’s my contribution to the discussion. Just because I’ve been collecting domestic anime discs for so long, I’ve got a fairly extensive collection. But there are still some noteable gaps in my collection. Anybody want to assist me?
Included among the numerous discs I’m still looking for affordable (or preferrably inexpensive) copies of are King Gainer volume 6, Zegapain volume 4, all of Sailor Moon S, Panda! Go Panda (particularly a non-Signature Series edition), a set of Ronin Warriors, Night on the Galactic Railroad, the Patlabor Original Series & New Files collections, Shonen Onmyouji volume 5, Dunbine volumes 11 & 12, Maison Ikkoku sets 2 & 4-8, Lupin the 3rd TV series vol. 11, and most of the Gatchaman collections.
And a Kimagure Orange Road TV series volume 6 replacement cover to finish off a second TV series set.
Granted, most of these discs I don’t strictly “need,” but would rather like to own as momentos of the R1 anime DVD era. If anybody feels like doing some trading, drop a message to me. I’ve got some obscure duplicates like AnimeEigo’s Spirit of Wonder, a Night Warriors volume 2, Cat Soup limited edition, Ariel, Gatchaman OVA, Prefectural Earth Defense Force, and a couple extra sets of Fate/stay night. Plus a whole lot of extra copies of more common discs.

If it makes you feel better, I missed an op to have my Panda! Go Panda autographed by Takahata in person when he was in L.A. He did shake my hand, though. And there was actually one Geneon Lupin volume I sold off, ‘cus the eps sucked[Monkeys stealing cars. *sigh*] and so did the compatibility with my player.
Stuff like this can make one’s fandom quite lonely, you know, reflecting on that “incomplete” feeling we all get because that precious fourth DVD volume of four, or sixth DVD volume of six, is nowhere to be found.
There are, which can be quite fun, a number of titles I’ve only casually watched over the years and only pick up when I see a bargain bin deal. For example, I’m on the third volume of BEST STUDENT COUNCIL, and own most of STELLVIA OF THE STARS, TETSUJIN 28 (TV), and several other under-the-radar Geneon Ent. titles. But I’m in no hurry to finish them, so if I seem them available for $3 or $5, then it’s a good day. If not, I won’t lose sleep over them.
But it’s even more troubling for manga collectors nowadays, I should imagine. I’m about to finish THE TWELVE KINGDOMS (anime), and have decided to read the original novels as well… whoops. Fortunately, I’ve managed to snag the four volumes available in English before their secondary market value go too high. The most I’ve paid was about $13 for a single softcover volume, which isn’t too far above the original SRP all things considered (One year from now, two years from now, forget about it.). It’s something that’s really making me second guess what titles I may pick up after that… do I really want to go through the trouble of tracking down all of SCHOOL RUMBLE, too?
I don’t have anything worth tradeing, but would be interested in selling that Crusher Joe dvd?
Also, you can find the Patlabor sets on ebay for decent prices.
Sorry. I’ve only got one copy of the Crusher Joe DVD, so I’m hanging on to that one.
Not sure what various people consider “decent” prices on Patlabor DVDs, but right now the cheapest Patlabor New Files collection on Ebay is $95, and the cheapest Original Series collection on Ebay is $60.
For me, Baoh’s the most overpriced OOP title, given that there wasn’t any real demand for it the first time around.
I suspect that there are plenty of people out there that think that Pioneer’s edited Dog of Flanders movie DVD is actually worth the $80 they ask for it, but I highly doubt anyone ever pays nearly that much for it.
