Hoshi no Koe a Major Success

The Nikkei Net newspaper reports that Makoto Shinkai’s brilliant independent anime OAV Hoshi no Koe: Voice of Distant Stars has sold over 10,000 DVD copies in Japan virtually on word of mouth success alone. The 25 minute long digital anime OAV was entirely written, animated, produced (excluding voice acting and music) and marketed by Makoto alone. After working five years in the Japanese video game industry, Shinkai quit his job and spend 7 months creating his masterpiece anime OAV on his home iMac computer. He now has plans for a second self-produced anime OAV, but now there are professional Japanese studios interested in sponsoring his work, and apparently interest as well from American anime companies interested in investing and licensing future films.
