Sakamichi no Apollon - The Next "Cowboy Bebop"?

Shinichiro Watanabe and Yoko Kanno are reuniting for an anime about jazz in 1960's Japan: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...composer-kanno

Needless to say, lots of anime fans will be watching this to see if they can recreate the magic of Bebop....

Eh.. Not really interested in an anime about jazz or a musician.. Still might check out the OST's though cuz I like Yoko Kanno a lot.

I'm not interested in it either. Being from the same director as Bebop is actually a minus for me. I didn't like Bebop at all. And I don't like jazz.

That combination would be a definite watch for me. I'm a big fan of both people and a rather big jazz aficionado. Jazz in the late 1950's and through the 1960's was a time of a lot of change and the idea of a series about that sounds rather good.

Edit: The name of the series is Sakamichi no Apollon. Looks likes it's coming in April. After watching the linked trailer, I'm in big time for this.

Shinichirō Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) will be directing, and handling the music is Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Genesis of Aquarion). Watanabe is known for being a director fixated on music, and if you remember the soundtrack to Cowboy Bebop, you know this is a dream team to handle a story that revolves around jazz music.

Yuki Kodama, the artist of the Shogakukan Manga Award winning original work was quoted, "I've been blessed with the best staff—to the point where when the anime adaptation of the manga was announced I could have sworn there was no such thing as such a luxurious combination. I'm so happy my heart could burst. I'm just waiting to see what kind of visual and musical collaboration they have in store for us."

Director Watanabe commented, "Actually this is the first time I'm doing an adaptation. When I read the manga, I thought, 'This is something I should do.' I'm making it with the feeling of having jam sessions with Kodama-sensei and leveraging the distinct flavor of the manga."

Yoko Kanno had this to say: "In youth, jazz. This is the work I had been waiting for the most. By all means please listen to the sounds of these young prodigies performing that I can hear from the manga, the beat of their life. "

More Bebop like "magic", more JAZZ. Hell no.

Probably won't be the next Cowboy Bebop, but I'm interested.

I am a little worried about all of these high school boys shows coming out though. I'm sure this one will be fine due to the people involved and Noit shows usually being pretty good, but I've grown a little tired of the school girls getting into shenanigans genre and it's not because they were female...

I wouldn't think it's going to be the "next Bebop", simply because I doubt the director would want to make more of the same experiment. He did it, it worked, I think he'd move on.

It might well be a good series, but I expect it to be a more straightforward narrative. The subject will probably limit the appeal of the series (much like Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad).

I dunno. I'd try it, but I'd wait until I was in the right mood to watch something different, and I'd set my expectations pretty low.

And i loved Beck, so maybe I'll give this a shot.

The talent involved hooks me into the show. The writing and the characters, however, will determine whether or not I'll stick around.

Why not get Yuji Ohno involved (most famous for his work with Lupin III but a hugely talented and famous jazz artist) since you know he was actually creating jazz in Japan in the 60's and still to this day with his Trio.

Heck, I'll watch it just for the music! That said, Kanno and Watanabe worked well together in previous collaborations(Macross Plus). And, they seem to have a genuine love for the subject matter. So, even if they don't create another instant classic, it'll still be quite an enjoyable show....

I'll watch it, but for it being the next "bebop" that's impossible.

Interesting to see them returning but the show doesn't excite me. Its a nice change from the normal anime we always get but I just wish he was doing another action show to be honest.
