DVD drive enigma
I've had a problem with a DVD drive for some time now. I'm not able to open it unless I have a paper clip to force it open. Then, I did a test today to see if the drive could read DVDs. It read a dvd movie with no problem. The strange thing is that with a DVD in the tray, it would open with the eject button, no problem. However, it won't open without a DVD in the tray. Anyone know why this may be?

Your drive has an eating disorder. It doesn't want to ingest anything, and will only open its mouth to purge what it's already eaten.
Your drive needs some serious counseling, perhaps using Body Image/Awareness therapy.

Rather than try to fix it, I would just buy a new $20 drive and call it a day.

I'm slowly leaning towards that option, Jon.
Desslock, how would I go about telling my DVD drive its okay and beautiful as it is?

Right now, its heads might be spinning. The best you may be able to do is make your hardware feel supported. Be there to listen if it wants to handshake. Gradually, it may open a connection and begin to communicate its insecurities to you. Don't push for the information; it'll all come out the cable eventually. Simply offer the drive support. It's probably been through quite a shock in its history if it's in its current state, and it needs to resolve its feelings in order to get a handle on the situation.
If that doesn't work, threaten to reprogram it with an axe. I find that often encourages even the most stubborn and outdated equipment to give it that old college try.
