Most bittersweet endings

Sad and bittersweet endings have been part of Japanese literature, not just in anime and manga. Bittersweet ending is half-happy, half-sad, It is where you can never gain something without losing another thing. A fine example is Romeo and Juliet's suicides in the ending.

The most bittersweet ending is Kimi Ga Nozomi Eien (a.k.a. Rumbling Hearts). In the end, Takayuki Narumi has lost a girlfriend but gained another girlfriend. I'm not going to spoil that ending by revealing the girls' names.

The best bittersweet endings are I My Me Strawberry Eggs and Fate Stay Night.

FS/N
SPOILER! (highlight to read):
The good guys have won the final battle but Shiro lost Saber as she was disappearing from his world back to her time. You can't gain something without sacrificing/losing/giving up something else.

I My Me Strawberry Eggs
SPOILER! (highlight to read):
Fuko Kuzuha tried in vain to reunite with her teacher but failed. in the end she left him a smile before she was out of his sight.

Gurren Lagann, even for all the defiance of the impossible the show laid out.

The only thing lost in SaiKano were my time and my sanity...what a terrible show. Two whiny characters crying for several episodes is not my idea of a good show...

Quoted for truth. And the plot elements in SaiKano are about as ridiculous as they come.

Fullmetal Alchemist- both the ending to the first anime series, and the Conqueror of Shambala movie.

SPOILER! (highlight to read):
TV series ends with Al sacrificing himself to bring Ed back to life, and then Ed in turn sending himself across the gate to bring Al back, in his original body and all.

CoS ends with Ed and Al having to close the gate between the worlds on "our" side, and end up spending the rest of their lives in Europe circa the 1920s/30s.

SaiKano is bittersweet?

SPOILER! (highlight to read):
It's one thing to lose the girl and then being able to move on with your life with support from others. It's another thing to lose the girl and then being the ONLY HUMAN LEFT ALIVE. WTF is this ****wittery?

If you consider that bittersweet, I'd hate to see what you consider tragic (y'know, other than Last Exile having been created).

I always considered bittersweet as having a message of hope or acceptance or personal growth/coming-to-terms mixed in with the sad/tragic aspects... or at least a possible future of happiness.

I definitely agree with Millennium Actress though. Gorgeous movie.

And as for another, the ending of the manga for Chrono Crusade. Damn, I love that so much.
