Funny Anime- you might want to try Excel Saga or Slayers. Hard to top those for pure laughs.

I love comedy, it's my favorite genre, so I can help you (though a lot of what I might recommend, I've actually read vs. watched.)

Gintama- My second favorite manga, and one of the funniest things I've ever read. It's different from your normal comedy.

Hoshin Engi- Hoshin Engi is a big perfect mix of a lot of different genres, but mostly it's historical, comedy, and action. Again, it's a perfect mix, so it's not an action series with comedy in it.

Love Hina, Midori Days, Pretty Face, I''s- All romantic comedies there, and they're some of my favorites.

Reborn!- The first 7 volumes of the series are a comedy, and they are hilarious, but after that the series turns into an action, at which point I lost complete interest... but the first 7 volumes are worth a try.

Bobobo- If you're into that type of comedy, it's hilarious.

SGT Frog (Keroro Gunso)- A great great comedy about alien frogs that continuously try to take over the planet, but fail on every occasion.

Dr. Slump- Very aged, and most jokes are pretty immature, but if you like that you'd love the series.

Lupin the 3rd- Classic series, and will forever be in history- just watch the dub.

Golden Boy- Perverted as hell, but funny.

Negima (not the remake).

Fan-service, Shouta, magic, funny things. Negima has them all.

Full Metal Panic is full of comedy, the first season and the second raid are action/drama as well but FUMMOFU is hilarious.
Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei is one giant laugh out loud show, 3rd season is airing now, also check out the OAV

Yakitate!! japan is pretty funny, its a shonen about making bread competatively, how is that not funny?

Pani Poni Dash! made me chuckle quite a bit with all the references

Genshiken is chuckleable.

Air Gear has a bit of humor in it as well

And of course, since this is a recomendation thread....

Ill third or whatever Gintama, funniest anime i've seen probably.

Some other ones that had me bursting at the seams are Nodame Cantabile, Seto no Hanayome, Gakuen Alice, Lovely Complex, School Rumble, The Wallflower, Hayate no Gotoku, Midori no Hibi and Yakitate Japan (my newest lol).

Its a sports anime, but Hajime no Ippo is hilarious.
