Icon10 Any decent anime recommendations for a newcomer?

I’m a noob when it comes to anime, any decent anime recommendations for a newcomer? There seems to be that many out there I’m resorting to a forum for advice.

I just watched Death Note it was ace! I can’t believe how good it was! I’m now in the middle of watching soul eater, I’m Glued to it because the style of the show, it’s brilliant! And the characters are so unique.

So... any decent anime recommendations for a newcomer that is similar to Death Note (story wise, shinigami's!!) and Soul Eater (Quirky characters, visually stunning style)

Cheers

You may want to try Code Geass due to your love for Death Note.

Although the style is different (soul eater is unique), you should check out Darker than Black and Xam'd Lost Memories, both of which are done by Bones.

I also recommend Monster if you like Death Note. No real supernatural element but its a masterpiece. Finally, just about everything in my sig is pretty ace.

cheers

cheers guys, Im on youtube now looking at your recommendations...

Code Geass looks alright not realy into the mecha thing, but that might change my mind. fullmetal alchemist seems alright! Is it good storywise? Im likeing the look of Egro proxy, seems to have had mixed reviews looking on the net about it.
Whats 'Bones' that the company? Darker than Black...sounds kinnda like heros. Iv read about Monster, seems alright. there a english dub version. somthing as complicated as that i would lose track if i read subs.

Thanks again everyone......still on net looking the the ones you suggested. hard to decide as they all seem like epics!

Bones is the animation studio, and they are very good, particularly with fight/action scenes. Hmm i guess you could say DTB its kinda like heroes, in that why have a variety of powers.

There isn't an english version of Monster im afraid, but Anime Keep has very good subs for it. It is definitely deserving of an american license in my opinion, but at 70 eps without much TNA and DBZ powerups, the american companies prolly don't think it will sell.

Code Geass the first season is very good, tho the second season is pretty bad till the very end. It gets too focused on the mecha in the second season imo.

Im not a big mecha fan either but some shows they play a smaller part than others, such as Full Metal Panic and The Third: Girl with the Blue Eye, both of which are some of my fav anime.

I think im gunna give Code geass and Darker than black a go. You got a point about monster, american companys are idiots when it comes to anything slightly original. Look at firefly and Arrested Development for example. I have actualy graduated uni with a first class honours in Animation and im only just getting round to watching anime?! strange aint it. I watched alot of studio ghibli stuff but not series. Im currently making a new CG short film, Anime is deffo gunna have a big influence. You know of any good CG animes? or films? saw Blood or somthing a while back, that was part CG i think.

Just watched first few episodes of code geass..not bad. like it, the mecha's aint grown on me yet tho. but gunna give it a chance.

cheers again DazarGaidin

CGI? I know final fantasy have some CGI movies. I recommend Advent children over the others. Its a good addition to the franchise.

Ergo Proxy isn't for everyone, but I enjoyed it lots and it is pretty gorgeous to look at.

Code Geass is basically Death Note with mecha

Bleach is loooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng but it does have unique characters.

Samurai 7 is another unqiue and different series. It's 26 episodes. And I remembered that some of the mecha in there is CG

I'm enjoying Claymore & I'm not usually into the whole blood & guts thing. Also, it's not recent but R.O.D. (the OVA & the TV series) both have unique elements & quirky characters.

I'd check out Berserk it's a little old school in the grapics department, but it's a great anime with lots of blood and gore and man the ending is hard to watch it's good, it's just not a happy ending.

Seconded, the only sad part about watching this is that you'll never see another anime again even nearly as good, so your standards might be set way to high for other series later.

You might want to check out the works of Makoto Shinkai, he made his first major anime Voices of a Distant Star on his mac computer. My fav from him is The Place Promised in our Early Days but a lot of people liked 5cm per Second more. You can get these in english, and i even rented them from that online vendor with the red envelopes.

If you want some really jaw dropping animation, check out the Kara no Kyoukai movies (do yourself a huge favor and download it instead of streaming, the quality will be no where near the same), and Seirei no Moribito (some of this is in english, and i believe will be airing on adult swim again this summer).
