A thought for a new game: Fighting RPG
Imagine this:
Take some SNK characters (Terry, Rock, Haohmaru) and put them in an RPG with the 3D Tales series battle system. I just thought about that the other day while hanging with my friends. The only downside is just like you have to listen to Demon Fang every fight, you'll hear Power Wave/Reppuken every fight. Might be fun

I'm pretty sure this same train of thought was how Shenmue got started in development, as the Virtua Fighter RPG. Then they decided to put original characters and scenarios into it...
It has happened a few times in the past. I think there's a Samurai Shodown RPG, and then there's Namco x Capcom. Not quite exactly what you're describing, but still similar. The best approach to this would be to take it outside standard continuity for the included fighting game franchises, and just use the character backstories as a basis to create something new and exciting.

Yeah, this sounds a whole lot like Shenmue to me.

I think making any fighting franchise into an RPG would be interesting. Fighting games usually have interesting characters, but incredibly poor character development. I'd love to get my hands on the Samurai Spirits RPG so I can get more insight into some of the characters storylines.

too bad all fighting games into x genre kind of sucked. The only thing I had fun with was Super Puzzle Fighter II, but that has no character development either

A Fighting Game/RPG?
What about Red Earth/Warzard? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Earth_(video_game)

^ As did the Tales of series as the op suggested. He's talking about using pre existing fighting game characters and pinning them in a RPG world ala the Tales and/or the Star Ocean series.
I think its a neat idea. I've always thought the SF cast had a pretty interesting character and a cool story. problem is, you never know there's a story behind them till you watch the bad movies. |

I think this idea would work great with Soul Calibur. Tales of the Sword did it halfway-right in Soul Calibur 3. I would love to see a FG made into an RPG, or maybe a FG with a 10-20 hour RPG.
Does Ehrgeiz count with its dungeon crawler?

I wouldn't really say so, since the fact that characters were shared between the fighting game and RPG seemed pretty much coincidental. The RPG was like a real-time roguelike and as such wasn't heavy on story at all.
(I really liked the Ehrgeiz RPG!)

Ehrgeiz RPG was great fun and pretty hard if you run low on supply's. Never got far on hard mode when you can't even return to town.
I completed it on normal. I say completed however nothing happens when you get the Phoenix feather. |

I guess nobody's heard of Virtua Quest.
Apparently it was exactly this, with the Virtua Fighter characters (it's a PS2/GC game, if memory serves). It was also crap, apparently. I lost interest when I found out it had preexisting characters from Virtua Fighter, since I'm not too keen on fighting game stories with a few exceptions (like Guilty Gear and Arcana Heart). |
